SAFETY & COMMUNITY RULES

Welcome to The Coliseum Bouldering Centre, Northumberland’s community climbing hub.

To keep everyone safe, happy, and climbing at their best, all visitors must read and agree to the following rules, and conditions before using our facilities.

GENERAL SAFETY

1. GENERAL SAFETY
  • All climbers must sign in / complete a registration and acknowledgment of risk form before climbing.
  • Under 18s must have a parent or guardian complete this form on their behalf.
  • No climbing is allowed under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Please remove all jewellery, tie back long hair, and wear suitable loose clothing and indoor shoes.
  • Report any damaged holds, mats, or equipment to a member of the team immediately.

BOULDERING AREA

2. BOULDERING AREA
  • Always check the fall zone before starting to climb or descend.
  • Downclimb where possible — jumping from height increases the risk of injury.
  • Spot other climbers if appropriate and never walk or climb underneath someone.
  • Climbing shoes must be worn while climbing.
  • No climbing shoes in the toilets.
  • Keep a shirt on at all times.
  • Keep the mats clear — no food, drink, or loose items.
  • No topping out!
  • Be aware that holds may spin — test them carefully before committing weight.
  • Climbers should warm up and stretch properly before starting.

SUPERVISION & AGE RULES

3. SUPERVISION & AGE RULES
  • Children under 14 must be actively supervised by an accompanying adult at all times.
  • Ages 14–17 may climb unsupervised only after sign-off by our in-house coaching team.
  • Parents and guardians are responsible for the conduct and safety of minors under their care.
  • Children must remain in the junior designated areas unless accompanied by an adult or coach.

ACCESSIBLE

  • Four designated accessible climbing positions designed for users with accessible needs
  • Wheelchair-friendly entrance
  • Lift access to the first floor
  • Chair lift to the mezzanine coffee area (Coming January 2026)
  • We’re passionate about creating an inclusive community where everyone can experience the joy of climbing.

CONDUCT & COMMUNITY

5. CONDUCT & COMMUNITY
  • Respect members of our team, fellow climbers, and the facility at all times.
  • No abusive, aggressive, or discriminatory behaviour will be tolerated.
  • Keep personal belongings tidy and use lockers or storage cubes where provided.
  • Dogs are welcome in café areas only and must be supervised.

FACILITIES

6. FACILITIES
  • Please keep showers and toilets clean and tidy.
  • Only indoor climbing shoes are permitted on climbing surfaces.
  • Use chalk responsibly.
  • No outside food or drink in café areas.

COACHING & INSTRUCTION

7. COACHING & INSTRUCTION
  • Only Coliseum-approved coaches may offer instruction within the centre.
  • Group sessions, junior clubs, and academies must be booked in advance.
  • Our coaching team reserves the right to remove participants acting unsafely or disruptively.

LIABILITY

8. LIABILITY
  • Climbing and associated training involve inherent risks.
  • By entering the facility, you accept full responsibility for your own actions and any injury sustained.
  • The Coliseum is not liable for loss, theft, or damage to personal belongings.

MEMBERSHIP & PAYMENTS

9. MEMBERSHIP & PAYMENTS
  • Memberships and passes are non-transferable.
  • Refunds are issued only at management’s discretion.
  • Please check current rates and terms on our memberships page.

FILMING & PHOTOGRAPHY

10. FILMING & PHOTOGRAPHY
  • Personal photos are welcome — tag us @coliseumbouldering!
  • Commercial photography or filming requires prior permission.
  • We may occasionally take promotional photos in the centre; if you prefer not to appear, please inform reception.

These rules may be updated periodically to reflect best practice and legal requirements.
Current versions are always available on our website and at reception.
